Aaron Ford Unseats Incumbent Gov. Joe Lombardo in Nevada Gubernatorial Race

LAS VEGAS, NV — Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford defeated incumbent Republican Governor Joe Lombardo in Tuesday’s general election, flipping the governor’s mansion and altering Nevada’s political trajectory for the next four years.
The race—called early Wednesday morning, November 4, 2026, as comprehensive countywide returns finalized—saw Ford garner 51.7% of the statewide vote (over 506,000 votes) compared to Lombardo’s 44.2% (approximately 432,000 votes), with nonpartisan candidate Danielle Ford capturing roughly 2.7%.
Ford’s victory represents a historic milestone in Silver State electoral politics: it marks only the second time in Nevada history that sitting governors have been ousted in back-to-back election cycles, following Lombardo’s unseating of Democrat Steve Sisolak in 2022. The only other occurrence took place over a century ago between 1910 and 1914.
Lombardo, who made record vetoes a centerpiece of his re-election platform as an executive check against legislative supermajorities, was unable to overcome strong Democratic turnout margins in Clark and Washoe counties. Despite a high-profile Election Day social media endorsement from President Donald Trump, GOP field operations fell short of eroding the early voting and mail ballot leads assembled by Democrats.

Voter Priorities and the Clark County Engine
Exit polling conducted across Nevada showed voters were overwhelmingly driven by economic pressures and institutional governance, with 36% citing the cost of living and 31% identifying the state of democracy as their primary concerns.
Ford’s campaign leaned heavily into everyday kitchen-table issues—proposing direct fuel relief subsidies, combating high housing costs, and pledging to protect local construction supply chains from costly federal trade tariffs.
In Clark County, where over 70% of the state’s electorate resides, Democrats expanded their margin on Election Day, besting Republicans by more than 3,000 votes in the final in-person tally to thwart any late GOP surge.
Legislative Alignment Ahead of the 2027 Session
Ford’s victory ends four years of divided government in Carson City.
With Democrats maintaining control of both the Nevada State Senate and State Assembly, the executive branch transition provides a clear legislative pathway for statutory priorities that had previously faced gubernatorial vetoes.
