DUI Crash Claims Lives of Mother and Two Sons: Suspect Admits to Drinking

Henderson, NV – January 9, 2023 A tragic incident occurred over the weekend when a DUI crash took the lives of a mother and her two young sons. According to a police report released by Henderson police on Tuesday, the suspect, 36-year-old Darryl Smith, confessed to medics that he had been drinking before the devastating incident.

The crash occurred just before 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, at the intersection of Lake Mead Parkway and Boulder Highway. Investigators believe the family was in a car stopped at a red light when they were struck from behind by Smith’s vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The victims have been identified as 38-year-old Rebecca Post, 6-year-old Achilles Quintanilla, and 5-year-old Leo Post-Quintanilla. Both Rebecca and Leo were pronounced dead at the scene, while 6-year-old Achilles later succumbed to his injuries at UMC.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered a heart-wrenching scene. The father and husband of the victims, who was also present, informed authorities that they had all been together just before the crash.

In a detailed report, the unidentified man’s emotional and heartbreaking demeanor during interactions with authorities was noted. The tragic loss of his wife and children left a profound impact on the devastated father.

Henderson Fire officials assisted in transporting Smith, who was driving a white Ram 1500, to St Rose Siena for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. During this process, a firefighter reported smelling alcohol on Smith and asked if he had been drinking. Shockingly, Smith admitted to consuming a significant amount, stating he had three glasses of wine and cough syrup.

Following his discharge from the hospital, Smith was taken into custody and transported to the Henderson Detention Center. He now faces three counts of DUI resulting in death and a count of reckless driving resulting in death.
