Former Nevada Secretary of State, a Republican, Refutes Voter Fraud Claims in Lawsuit

LAS VEGAS — A lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump’s campaign, along with Nevada and national Republicans, has sparked controversy as it alleges thousands of noncitizens registered to vote in Nevada. The suit, filed in Carson City District Court, claims over 6,400 noncitizens were on voter rolls in 2020, and nearly 4,000 of them voted. However, many of those individuals are likely naturalized U.S. citizens.

The lawsuit relies on data from a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) file used in a prior case, which a judge dismissed. It contends that noncitizens were registered to vote while obtaining identification at the DMV, where proof of residency, not citizenship, is required. Nevada law, passed in 2018, allows the DMV to automatically register U.S. citizens as voters. Federal courts have ruled that election officials cannot demand proof of citizenship during voter registration.

The Secretary of State’s Office emphasized the numerous safeguards in place to prevent ineligible voters from casting ballots. “Claims of widespread noncitizen voting are false and only serve to undermine trust in our elections,” a spokesperson said.

Michael McDonald, chairman of the Nevada GOP, expressed concerns over noncitizens influencing elections, stating, “Nevada’s elections should reflect its citizens’ voices, not be influenced by those without legal standing.”

Despite ongoing claims, previous lawsuits challenging Nevada’s automatic voter registration process have failed. Former Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske, a Republican, found no evidence of noncitizens voting in the 2020 election. She highlighted the naturalization of nearly 41,000 immigrants between 2015 and 2020, suggesting that most noncitizen registrations likely occurred as individuals became U.S. citizens.

The lawsuit mirrors previous claims of voter fraud made after the 2020 election, many of which were dismissed in court due to a lack of evidence.

  1. I can’t comment on the numbers of non-citizens registering and/or voting. I haven’t looked into it. I did want to say that I trust Barbara Cegavske’s integrity and know that she wasn’t part of some type of conspiracy to over turn the will of the people. Having said that, saying that she “found no evidence of noncitizens voting in the 2020 election.” does not mean all that it implies. Historically the SOS’s office generally had 1 ft and 1 pt investigator and they are generally only able to work on cases where there is a reported issue. The vast majority of the SOS election complaints come from candidates filing complaints for things like finance/donation irregularities, making provable false claims like a candidates residency etc.
Even with Barbara speaking honestly about not having found irregularities it doesn’t mean that DMV voter registration isn’t problematic enough to not have it in place. If it is going to be in place it is more than reasonable for the person registering to show proof of citizenship through a government issued picture ID. It’s a simple thing that would go a long way in showing that are elections are secure.

  2. HOGWASH! The governor was cheated in 2018 along with a bunch of others. I was forces to drive 30 miles or more to vote which I never had to do before. There wasn’t a spot to fit a playing card to park in a multi mile radius and the line was miles long. It was impossible to even think about.. I put my mail in ballot in the mail and have no idea if it got counted. The result was sissy-lick was installed. Obviously for the planned lockdowns (worst in the country) and to cheat the 2020 election… To vote, all you have to do is say you are unhoused and tell them the street corner you hang out on… Of course the old SoS will say nothing was ever wrong because she would have to admit incompatible or corruption. There are plenty of RINO’s…

    1. It is my understanding that if you are homeless in Washoe County all you have to do is use a governmental assigned address found generally in the East 4th Street Reno vicinity to establish residental legitamacy. I image the Cares Campus is the latest one being used. You still could be living under a tarp on the sidewalk but would be eligible to vote if the rest of your registration is in order and can be supposedly verified. Still insane IMO leaving the door open to potential mischievousness.
