Gastro Alert: Imported Shellfish Sends Warning Shot About Food Safety Failures
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, May 5, 2025 9:19 pm
The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is investigating multiple cases of gastrointestinal illness linked to imported frozen half-shell oysters from South Korea. Five Clark County residents reported symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach pain after consuming these oysters, which were distributed to local restaurants via California ports.
The affected oysters were processed by JBR (KR-15-SP), harvested on January 6, 2025, from Designated Area No. 1 in the Republic of Korea, and are marked with lot code B250106. While no hospitalizations have been reported, the incident raises questions about the safety protocols for imported seafood and the potential risks posed to American consumers.
This situation underscores the importance of stringent food safety measures and the need for vigilance when it comes to imported food products. Consumers are urged to be cautious and report any related symptoms to the SNHD.
