In a harrowing incident on the Las Vegas freeway in February, Officer Matthew Nordone was shot in the leg during a struggle with a suspect. But thanks to the quick thinking and swift action of fellow officers Derek Reynolds and another unnamed colleague, Nordone’s life was saved.

Officer Reynolds, despite being involved in an accident en route to the scene, prioritized Nordone’s safety, rushing to his aid and helping transport him to the hospital. “My best friend got shot and I didn’t know if he was going to make it,” Reynolds recounted the emotional ordeal.

The incident began when Nordone responded to reports of a man walking along the freeway. The encounter quickly escalated, leading to a struggle during which the suspect grabbed Nordone’s gun and fired.

Captain Joshua Martinez detailed the chaotic scene: “While in a struggle on the ground, the officer’s weapon was discharged. One of the rounds struck our officer. Another arriving officer was able to assist in taking the suspect into custody.”

Nordone expressed his gratitude for the heroic actions of his fellow officers, emphasizing the strong bond of brotherhood within the department. “These are my brothers… It’s nice to know when the chips are down, these guys got my back, they know I got their back, and we will do whatever it takes to get each other out of danger,” he said.

The life-saving efforts of Reynolds and the other officer were recognized in a ceremony honoring nearly 60 officers for their commitment to serving the community. Undersheriff Andrew Walsh praised the officers’ bravery and dedication, reminding the public of the dangers faced by law enforcement every day.

This incident serves as a powerful testament to the courage and camaraderie within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, highlighting the extraordinary lengths officers go to protect and support one another in the face of danger.
