Nevada Senate Democrats Elect Las Vegas Lawmaker Edgar Flores as Senate Majority Leader

CARSON CITY, NV — In their first major organizational move following Tuesday’s general election, Nevada Senate Democrats elected state Sen. Edgar Flores (D-Las Vegas) as the next Senate Majority Leader on Thursday morning.

The leadership vote—finalized Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. PST and reported by the Las Vegas Sun—elevates the veteran Southern Nevada attorney and lawmaker to the highest legislative post in the upper chamber.

Flores will lead the 13-member Democratic Senate majority when the 84th Nevada Legislative Session convenes in Carson City in February 2027.

The caucus election follows a sweeping general election cycle that saw Democrats capture the governor’s mansion under Aaron Ford, sweep all six statewide constitutional executive offices, and secure a two-thirds supermajority in the State Assembly.

However, with Republican Assemblywoman Danielle Gallant defending Senate District 20 in Clark County, Senate Democrats fell one seat short of a simultaneous supermajority in the upper house, leaving the party with a 13-to-8 advantage.

Strategic Balancing in a Divided Legislative Structure

Flores, who previously served in the State Assembly before winning election to Senate District 2 representing central and East Las Vegas, brings extensive experience in statutory drafting, labor regulation, and municipal government oversight.

Because Democrats do not hold a two-thirds supermajority in the Senate, any revenue-generating measure or proposed constitutional tax restructuring will require at least one Republican vote to clear the upper chamber floor.

Flores’s leadership style will be pivotal in bridging caucus priorities with Senate Republicans, while working in tandem with the newly elected Assembly Democratic leadership and incoming Governor-elect Aaron Ford.

“Our caucus remains committed to delivering real results for working families across the state—lowering living costs, protecting healthcare access, and investing in public classrooms,” Flores stated following the leadership election.

Pre-Session Committee Assignments and Interim Deadlines

Senate Democrats will spend the remaining weeks of November finalizing committee chair assignments, including the pivotal Senate Finance and Judiciary committees, as bill-draft requests (BDRs) are formally processed ahead of the statutory pre-filing deadlines.

With unified Democratic control across the executive branch and both legislative houses, Flores will steer the legislative agenda in an environment free of gubernatorial veto threats that characterized the prior four years.
