NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV — A massive joint law enforcement response swarmed Legacy High School on Thursday afternoon, placing the campus and several neighboring schools on a hard lockdown following reports of an armed suspect on school grounds. While initial reports feared an active shooter situation, authorities have confirmed that no students or officers were injured, though a North Las Vegas police officer did discharge their firearm during the encounter.
The Active Shooter Response
The incident began early Thursday afternoon when reports of a person with a gun on the high school campus, located on Deer Springs Way, triggered an immediate active shooter protocol.
-
The Response: Officers from the North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD) and the Clark County School District (CCSD) Police quickly established a hard perimeter, blocking off the intersections of Commerce Street and Deer Springs Way.
-
The Encounter: Upon arriving on the campus, an NLVPD officer encountered the armed individual. During the confrontation, the officer discharged their service weapon at the suspect.
-
The Outcome: It was later determined that the suspect was not struck by the officer’s gunfire. However, the individual was located on the campus having suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead.
Anxious Parents Wait Outside Perimeter
As specialized units worked to clear the campus building by building, hundreds of panicked parents rushed to the area after receiving frantic text messages from their children inside. For over an hour, families were held behind police lines with minimal information.
“Yes, we understand that there’s little information that you can tell us, but we still need to know something about our kids who are in school,” said Nichole Nelson Phillips, a parent waiting outside the Commerce and Deer Springs blockade. Officers on the scene continually assured the crowd that students inside were safe.
Campus Cleared Safely
By late Thursday afternoon, NLVPD officials officially contained the scene and lifted the lockdown, allowing emotional reunions to take place outside. Authorities re-verified that no students, faculty, or officers sustained injuries during the incident.
The identity of the suspect and their connection to the school have not yet been released. The incident is being thoroughly reviewed under standard protocols regarding officer-involved shootings.
