A judge ordered that Jaime Bustillos Jr., 19, be held without bail following allegations he fired at an unmarked police vehicle. Bustillos was out on his own recognizance in a separate case at the time of the Sept. 19 incident.
He is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and discharging a firearm at or into an occupied vehicle. During the hearing, the judge rejected his claim that he didn’t realize the target was a law enforcement officer, stating, “It’s not the wild, wild West … You’re lucky it’s not a murder case.”
Defense attorney Robert Purdy argued that Bustillos reacted to surveillance of his home and invoked prior threats made against his family. He also contended that the single shot shattered a rear window, not a deliberate attempt to kill. Prosecutors countered that the act was reckless and dangerous, noting that Bustillos had hit other vehicles at high speed, resisted commands, concealed a firearm, and had 60 THC vape cartridges in his possession.
No enhancements are currently applied for targeting a police officer, according to court records. Bustillos’s next hearing date has not been publicly disclosed.
