Trump Administration Slashes Red Tape to Strengthen Nevada Military Readiness

LAS VEGAS, NV — In a move hailed by supporters as a “common-sense” victory for national defense, President Donald Trump has issued a new Presidential Determination to shield U.S. Air Force training operations in Nevada from burdensome environmental litigation and state-level regulatory overreach.
Prioritizing the Mission
Issued on Monday, April 20, the memorandum invokes Section 313 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act. The President determined it is in the “paramount interest of the United States” to exempt Air Force jet fighter training operations across Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada from certain federal, state, and local water pollution requirements for a period of one year.
This determination comes as the Air Force faces ongoing legal challenges from environmental activists, specifically in cases such as Oregon Natural Desert Ass’n v. Meink. By issuing this one-year waiver, the administration is ensuring that critical combat training—essential for pilots stationed at Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases—can continue without the threat of being grounded by activist-led lawsuits.
Strengthening the Silver State’s Defense Role
The exemption is a direct boon to Nevada’s massive military footprint:
-
American Air Superiority: The move supports the development of the “Collaborative Combat Aircraft” (uncrewed drones) currently being tested at Creech AFB to maintain a lethal edge over foreign adversaries.
-
Economic Stability: By protecting training operations, the administration secures the thousands of jobs and billions in economic impact generated by Nevada’s military ranges.
-
National Sovereignty: Supporters argue that military readiness should never be held hostage by local administrative “process and sanctions” that don’t account for the unique needs of high-speed jet operations.
What This Means for Nevada
The exemption began on April 20, 2026, and will remain in effect until April 20, 2027. While the waiver bypasses certain water pollution administrative authorities, the administration emphasized that the move does not limit the Air Force’s overall commitment to being good stewards of the land, but rather removes the “weaponized litigation” that has slowed modernization efforts.
