Wildfire Shuts Down Remote Saline Valley Warm Springs in Death Valley Along Nevada Border

DEATH VALLEY, CA / ESMERALDA COUNTY, NV — The National Park Service (NPS) has issued an emergency closure for the Saline Valley Warm Springs Campground, a world-renowned backcountry desert oasis located in remote western Death Valley National Park.

The sudden closure—announced after a fast-moving fire swept through the Lower Spring area—has cut off vehicle and foot access to an iconic soaking destination frequently accessed by off-roaders and campers across Nevada’s Esmeralda and Nye county borders.

Evening Blaze Rips Through Desert Palm Grove

The fire ignited at approximately 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, inside the deeply isolated Lower Warm Springs complex.

Fed by unseasonably dry, high-desert winds and fueled by thick skirts of dead fronds surrounding approximately 80 non-native palm trees, the blaze spread rapidly through the central oasis.

Park rangers confirmed that all visitors, campers, and volunteer campground caretakers were evacuated without injury.

Initial field damage assessments indicate that while the fire destroyed a storage shed and infrastructure at the NPS volunteer camp host site—presenting potential hazardous material risks—the historic stone-and-concrete soaking tubs at Lower Springs survived structural collapse.

However, external plumbing networks and distribution piping running to and from the geothermal pools melted in the intense heat.

The adjacent Palm Springs section of the primitive campground was spared from the flames.

Hazard Mitigations and Access Road Closures

Because the springs sit more than 40 miles down rugged, unpaved washboard tracks from the nearest paved state highway, emergency response logistics remain grueling.

The backcountry destination is historically popular with Nevada recreationists utilizing rugged corridors through Big Pine and the Inyo Mountains or connecting via remote trailheads in Esmeralda County.

“Right now, we need the public to stay away from Saline Valley Campground until the hazards are assessed and dealt with and the site can be safe for the public to access,” said Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds.

NPS officials have not set a target reopening date, warning backcountry motorists that anyone attempting to bypass perimeter trail barricades faces federal citations.
