Don’t Get Caught in the Flood: Free Sandbags Available in Northern Nevada Counties

NEVADA – Due to the Pineapple Express, our region is experiencing a continuous downpour of rain.

While rain is usually celebrated in Northern Nevada, it’s not the case this time around. The ground is still covered with record-breaking amounts of snow, which means that the inevitable result is flooding.

Reports of flooding have already surfaced on North Carson Street, where the heavy rain has caused traffic to create splashes of water along the main thoroughfare.

As a responsible citizen, you can do your part to prevent flooding by keeping storm drains free from debris, snow, and ice.

This can significantly minimize the risk of flooding and property damage.

Free sandbags are available in each county to help you prepare for potential property damage.

It’s best to take necessary precautions now to avoid any unfortunate incidents later on.

To stay safe during a flood, the Nevada Department of Emergency Management recommends taking several steps.

Before a flood, create an emergency communications plan, build a disaster supply kit, document your belongings, know your flood risk, and purchase or renew a flood insurance policy.

To protect your property, elevate your furnace, water heater, and electric panel, consider installing check valves, construct barriers to stop floodwater, clear debris, and secure outdoor furniture.

During a flood, pay attention to authorities, evacuate when asked, and do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters.

Avoid hydroplaning by checking tire pressure and slowing down.

Keep checking for updates on flooding emergencies.
