NEVADA – A magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit southeast Turkey and Syria on February 6, leaving over 47,000 people dead, 1.5 million homeless, and causing immense damage.
The Turkish community in Reno, Nevada, came together to fundraise for their home country, raising almost $18,000 of their $500,000 goal. The Northern Nevada Turkish Cultural Association is organizing a vigil on March 5, 2023, to support the earthquake victims.
While the official casualty number is around 40,000, many believe it is a massive understatement, given the vast amount of rubble and thousands of missing bodies. The earthquake worsened an already struggling situation in Turkey, which will impact people emotionally, physically, and financially for generations.
The fundraiser supports TPF’s Kahramanmaras Earthquake Relief Fund and recovery efforts, helping first responders meet immediate needs and longer-term recovery efforts.
