NEVADA – In an effort to combat the rising issue of porch piracy, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is enlisting the help of vigilant residents living in Washoe County but outside the city limits of Reno and Sparks. The initiative aims to catch thieves who brazenly snatch packages left on porches and residential doorways, especially as the holiday season brings a surge in package deliveries.

The sting operation, set to span the entirety of the holiday season, is a proactive measure to deter and apprehend those responsible for package theft. With the increasing prevalence of online shopping and home deliveries, porch pirates have become a growing concern, prompting law enforcement to explore innovative ways to safeguard community members from falling victim to this type of crime.

Residents interested in participating in this community-focused effort are encouraged to contact Detective Todd Williams via email at tawilliamsjr@washoecounty.gov. The sheriff’s office assures that they will make an effort to respond to all inquiries and requests for participation, while also asking for the public’s patience as they coordinate the logistics of this collaborative endeavor.

To enhance the security of delivered packages and minimize the risk of porch piracy, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office offers the following tips to the community:

1. Track Packages: Keep an eye on delivery notifications and try to be home when packages are expected. If not possible, consider asking a trusted neighbor or friend to pick up the package.

2. Alternative Delivery Locations: If applicable, have packages delivered to your workplace for added security.

3. Signature Requirement: Opt for package delivery that requires a signature to ensure it reaches the intended recipient.

4. Delivery Lockers: Utilize delivery lockers available in some areas for a secure drop-off point.

5. Security Cameras: Install visible security cameras that cover entry points and are easily noticeable from the street.

6. Report Suspicious Activity: Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement promptly.

This collaborative effort underscores the importance of community involvement in fostering a safer and more secure living environment. Together, residents and law enforcement can work hand in hand to curtail porch piracy and ensure a joyous and secure holiday season for everyone.
