Metro Police Identify Officer Wounded in Southwest Valley Ambush and Barricade Incident

LAS VEGAS, NV — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has officially identified 36-year-old Officer Zaira Venegas-Hernandez as the officer who was wounded during a domestic violence call and subsequent barricade situation in the southwest valley.

The incident—which marks LVMPD’s 10th officer-involved shooting of 2026—left Officer Venegas-Hernandez hospitalized, an adult female victim injured, and both the male suspect and a female juvenile deceased inside the residence.

Midnight Emergency Response on Pigeon Point Court

According to dispatch records and media briefings provided by LVMPD Captain Adam Seely, communications operators received an urgent 911 call at approximately 12:29 AM on Monday, August 10. A frantic female reported that an adult male was attempting to burn her with a blowtorch inside a residence in the 4500 block of Pigeon Point Court, near Buffalo Drive and Peace Way.

While officers were en route, the call was updated after the victim informed dispatchers that she had been shot. Upon arrival, responding patrol officers observed signs that the suspect was actively attempting to set the home on fire.

Ambush at the Interior Door and SWAT Entry

Recognizing an immediate threat to life, officers initiated a tactical entry into the residence. As officers approached a closed interior door, the suspect fired through the barrier without warning, striking Officer Venegas-Hernandez. An officer returned fire as the team executed an emergency withdrawal from the structure to establish a perimeter and request SWAT and Crisis Negotiators.

Officer Venegas-Hernandez was transported to University Medical Center (UMC) Trauma, where she was stabilized. A female victim managed to escape the home shortly after officers withdrew and was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

Following tactical negotiations, LVMPD SWAT operators breached the residence and located the male suspect and a female juvenile, both suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Medical personnel declared both deceased at the scene.

“Officer Venegas-Hernandez and her team made a courageous entry into a hazardous, active arson situation to save lives,” department officials noted. “Per standard procedure, the Force Investigation Team is conducting a complete review of the incident.”

Assigned to the Tourist Safety Division out of the Spring Valley Area Command, Officer Venegas-Hernandez has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending internal force review. The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release official identifications and cause-of-death rulings for the deceased.
