Susie Lee in the Crosshairs: Speaker Johnson Plants Flag in Vegas, Rallies GOP Volunteers in Battleground NV-03

House Speaker Mike Johnson dropped into the NRCC’s Las Vegas Battlestation Tuesday to rally volunteers for Republican congressional candidate Marty O’Donnell, sharpening the GOP’s focus on Democrat Rep. Susie Lee as control of the House narrows to a handful of battleground districts.

Johnson and O’Donnell thanked campaign volunteers and supporters preparing for the final sprint in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, where the NRCC recently opened a permanent field operation designed to recruit volunteers, contact voters and build the turnout machine Republicans believe can finally retire Lee. The committee opened the Battlestation earlier this month as part of its growing investment in O’Donnell’s campaign.

“This really comes down to about 19 seats,” Johnson told the crowd, underscoring just how little electoral oxygen separates a Republican majority from a Democrat takeover.

The Speaker would know. Johnson is in the middle of a breakneck 30-day campaign blitz through 34 competitive congressional districts in 18 states, traversing the country during the August recess to defend vulnerable Republicans and hunt for Democrat-held seats that can expand the majority. Nevada is not a courtesy stop on that itinerary. It is part of the battlefield.

O’Donnell used his remarks to frame the race in considerably darker ideological terms, repeatedly warning about Marxism, the influence of the Democratic Socialists of America and a Democrat Party he argues has lurched far beyond the political center.

“Susie Lee as someone who voted 90% of the time with Joe Biden, and I see her as pretty much a rubber-stamped Democrat,” O’Donnell told supporters.

That argument is becoming the spine of his campaign. The former composer behind the “Halo” and “Destiny” franchises has spent months portraying Lee not as some independent-minded Nevada pragmatist, but as another dependable vote for the Washington Democrat machine. The NRCC’s “MAGA Majority” program has likewise elevated O’Donnell as one of its premier challengers, pitching the small-business owner and political outsider as a direct contrast with an entrenched incumbent.

Republicans are not whispering about their intentions anymore. They have opened an office, deployed national resources, and sent the Speaker of the House to thank the people who will knock the doors.

The reason is buried in the 2024 scoreboard.

Donald Trump narrowly carried NV-03 two years ago even as Lee survived her congressional race by fewer than three percentage points. Reuters now describes the district as a critical House battleground, precisely the sort of ticket-splitting suburban seat where a national political wave can turn an incumbent’s comfortable assumptions into an election-night obituary.

Nevada itself has been marching rightward. Republican Joe Lombardo took the governor’s mansion in 2022. Trump became the first Republican presidential candidate to carry the Silver State since 2004. Now national Republicans are treating Lee’s district less like hostile territory and more like unfinished business.

For Democrats, the symbolism of Tuesday’s stop was difficult to miss.

While Lee has the title, Republicans increasingly have the infrastructure, the presidential vote history and a Speaker crisscrossing America telling activists that fewer than two dozen seats will decide who controls Washington.

Republicans are preparing for November and the Las Vegas Battlestation is open.
