TRUMP AT THE U.N.: ‘WHILE OTHERS HAVE TALKED, I HAVE ACTED

President Donald Trump used the United Nations General Assembly stage this week to deliver an expansive defense of American sovereignty and military power, declaring that his administration would confront threats directly rather than allow them to fester.

Addressing the 81st session of the General Assembly on September 22, Trump told world leaders that “America is back” and argued that the United States had become stronger under his leadership. The White House described the speech as a rejection of global control and a reaffirmation of American sovereignty. 

“So, while others have talked, I have acted,” Trump said. “While others have spoken of peace, I have made peace. While others have ignored threats, I have confronted them.” 

Trump devoted substantial attention to Iran, calling the Islamic Republic the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism and reiterating that his administration would not allow Tehran to obtain a nuclear weapon. The remarks come amid an ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict that has stretched for months despite Trump’s earlier declarations that American military operations had severely damaged Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Reuters reported that Trump used the 37-minute address to defend those actions while signaling that diplomacy could still play a role. 

The president also delivered a blunt warning closer to home, declaring that Washington would no longer tolerate hostile actors gaining a foothold anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. He defended the administration’s use of military power against drug cartels, which Trump has designated as foreign terrorist organizations, and compared the groups to ISIS. 

Immigration and national sovereignty became another central theme.

“There is no human right to illegal immigration, but there is a right to remain a sovereign nation,” Trump told the assembly while accusing international institutions of pressuring Western nations to accept mass migration. He also criticized U.N. human-rights officials over their objections to elements of his administration’s immigration and social policies. 

Trump extended that sovereignty argument to taxation and emerging technology, declaring that “there is no global government” and promising that there would be no global taxes while he remains president. He also rejected international efforts to establish centralized control over artificial intelligence, which he repeatedly referred to as “Super Intelligence.” 

The speech also took aim at communism. Trump criticized the Cuban government and said his administration would oppose communist influence in the Western Hemisphere, while predicting political change in Cuba and greater security in Mexico. 

The administration’s sweeping description of its foreign-policy record is disputed by critics and some foreign-policy analysts, particularly as the war with Iran continues and several major geopolitical disputes remain unresolved. Reuters reported that Trump arrived at the United Nations facing skepticism from allies over the duration and consequences of the Iran conflict. 

But Trump’s message to the assembled world leaders was unmistakable. America, he argued, would not subordinate its borders, military power, tax policy or emerging technology to international institutions.

“Freedom was not a gift that Americans won easily,” Trump said in closing. “After 250 years, it is not one that we will ever, ever, ever surrender.”
