FDA-Approved Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids Available Without Medical Checkups
LAS VEGAS – With FDA approval, hearing aids can now be bought over the counter at stores like CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and Best Buy without a medical exam.
Certified ENT Surgeon Dr. Sreek Cherukuri said this option is a long overdue change that can benefit some people. “It is designed for people with mild to moderate loss, but the vast majority of people we see in our ear, nose, and throat clinics are moderate to severe or worse,” he said.
Hearing aids for people with moderate to severe hearing loss need a high level of care, and custom-made hearing aids cost an average of $2300 for a single unit. Options available at stores range from $200 to $1,200 per pair.
If you only have mild to moderate hearing loss, you can save a lot of money. About 80% of people who would benefit from a hearing aid don’t wear anything at all.
Dr. Cherukuri went to three Best Buys and three Walgreens and wasn’t happy with the selection. Many options were out of stock, and the salespeople knew nothing about them.
“I do hope that stores get smarter over time and give advice to people who come in.” Dr. Cherukuri says that people with hearing loss should go see a doctor, have someone look in their ears, and get a hearing test. These tests are covered by insurance, so at least you’ll know if your hearing loss is mild or moderate.
