The Federal Government Extends the Real ID Enforcement Deadline to 2025

Las Vegas, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – The federal government has postponed the implementation of REAL ID by two years, allowing citizens more time to get ID cards that meet the security criteria.

The Department of Homeland Security said on Monday that the complete enforcement date has been moved out from May 3 next year to May 7, 2025.

Federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration, will continue to accept state ID cards and other types of identification that do not conform with REAL ID until that date.

“This extension will give states needed time to ensure their residents can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card,” Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas said in a statement. “DHS will also use this time to implement innovations to make the process more efficient and accessible.”

REAL ID-compliant ID cards are denoted by stars. In Nevada, new REAL ID compliant ID cards include an outline of the state with a star within in the upper right corner.

Once the rule is implemented, a state-issued ID card must be REAL ID compliant in order to pass through TSA security checkpoints inside airports or access certain federal institutions.
