Reno Non-profit Looking for Community Kitchen “I Know What It Is Like to Be Hungry”

RENO, Nev. (775 Times, NV Globe) – Rural Emergency Assistance Program (REAP) in Reno is seeking for a place to cook food once a week.

Every Saturday in Barbra Bennett Park, REAP volunteers put up a movable table and distribute warm meals and hygiene goods to people in need.

REAP serves not just Reno, but also rural areas in northern Nevada such as Fallon. Chuck Doucette, the non-founder, profit’s is determined to find a spot where food can be prepared for the public, especially because he understands what it’s like to be hungry.

“I grew up in the foster care system and I would run away a lot. There were many days when I was hungry, so I understand what these people are going through.”

Many REAP volunteers grew raised in foster care, where they alleged they were abused and would frequently run away, leaving them homeless. They stated that their own experiences and triumphs over adversity had inspired them to be sensitive toward others. This is why they devote time and money to charitable giving.

Doucette has witnessed an increase in need for assistance, notably with food, over the years.

“I know people who are not eating enough just so they can save money to pay rent that is just not right,” said Doucette.

Every week, he prepares food in his own kitchen at home in Sparks, although this presents complications. He stated that he need a huge space so that guests may enjoy warm food directly from the pot to their plates.

“In all reality, I need a communal kitchen so I can prepare food while still following health and safety codes, plus it would help my organization to have a place to meet. The days are getting colder with snow and rain, so it is getting harder for people to come out and get food,” said Doucette.
