In Reno, Nevada, small business owner Isaac Howe, founder of Orucase, is confronting significant challenges due to recent tariff policies. Howe, who started his company 13 years ago with just twenty dollars, designs and manufactures travel cases for cyclists and athletes. His business relies heavily on imports from Vietnam, and the proposed 46% tariffs on these imports have created substantial uncertainty.
“We have cargo on the water, and we have no way of knowing if, by the time it lands, this administration will have reversed that course and imposed a policy that we simply don’t have the cash to absorb,” Howe stated.
Senator Jacky Rosen visited Orucase to discuss the impact of these tariffs. She expressed concern over the sweeping nature of the tariffs and their implementation. “Countless Nevadans have contacted me because they’re worried sick about how recklessly the sweeping new tariffs are being implemented and impact their business,” Rosen said.
The uncertainty surrounding these tariffs is affecting Howe’s ability to plan for the future, including hiring new staff. “The long-term ripple effect that this has in the health of our business and in the community is in creating jobs,” he noted.
As the debate over tariff policies continues, small business owners like Howe are navigating a complex landscape, striving to maintain operations and support their communities amid economic uncertainties.
