Power Play: NV Energy’s Proposed Increase Sparks Public Outcry
By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, May 20, 2025 10:51 am
Nevadans are facing yet another financial burden as NV Energy seeks approval for a 9% rate hike, citing the 2024 heatwave and infrastructure investments as justification. This proposal would increase annual revenues by $215.7 million, potentially raising a typical monthly single-family bill by nearly $15 starting October 1, 2025.
While NV Energy claims these funds are necessary to recover costs from prior investments aimed at ensuring long-term affordability and reliability, many residents are skeptical. The utility also proposes increasing its return on equity from 9.5% to 10.25%, a move that raises questions about prioritizing shareholder profits over consumer relief.
Additional proposals include implementing a low-income residential rider to waive the basic $20 monthly service charge, introducing a “demand charge” to address spikes in energy use, and altering billing for new rooftop solar customers from monthly to per 15-minute intervals.
The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) has scheduled two consumer sessions for public feedback:
-
Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the PUCN Hearing Room A, 9075 West Diablo Drive, Suite 250, Las Vegas, NV 89148
-
Wednesday, June 6, 2025, at 6 p.m. at the Clark County Commission Chambers, 500 South Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89106
For those unable to attend, written comments can be mailed to:

As Nevadans grapple with rising living costs, this proposed rate increase adds another layer of financial strain. It’s crucial for residents to voice their opinions and hold utilities accountable for decisions that impact household budgets.
