Las Vegas police have determined that a Clark County School District bus driver was at fault in the crash that killed 13-year-old Haylee Ryan last month in the northwest valley.

According to Metro Police, the collision occurred on the afternoon of September 26 when Ryan was struck by a school bus near the intersection of Grand Teton Drive and Shaumber Road. Investigators concluded that the bus driver failed to yield the right of way as Ryan attempted to cross the street in a marked crosswalk on her electric scooter.

Ryan was taken to University Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries. Authorities said speed and impairment were not believed to be factors in the crash.

The school district confirmed that the bus driver has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The driver’s identity has not been released.

The fatal crash has sparked renewed calls for improved pedestrian safety measures near schools, following multiple student fatalities in Clark County this year. Police say their findings will be submitted to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for review.
