VIOLENCE IN WASHINGTON: After Attack on Trump, Nevada Democrats Face Questions on Defunding Security Agencies

By TheNevadaGlobeStaff, April 27, 2026 6:00 am

A deranged gunman attempted to breach security at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night while President Donald Trump and top administration officials were in attendance, triggering a rapid evacuation and tense moments inside one of Washington’s highest-profile events.
According to reports, the suspect charged a Secret Service checkpoint armed with multiple weapons before being stopped and taken into custody. One Secret Service officer was struck in a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to recover. President Trump and other senior officials were safely evacuated as agents secured the scene.
The swift response drew praise across the country for the United States Secret Service and law enforcement personnel whose training likely prevented a far worse outcome.
But in Nevada, the incident is also renewing attention on the political fight over funding for homeland security and protective agencies.
Critics are pointing to past votes by Dina Titus and Steven Horsford opposing Republican-backed funding measures tied to the Department of Homeland Security, the broader agency umbrella that includes the Secret Service. Republicans argue those votes weaken the very institutions responsible for protecting elected officials, federal personnel, and the public.
That contrast sharpened immediately after Saturday’s attack.
At a moment when Secret Service agents were risking their lives to stop an armed suspect, conservatives argued Washington Democrats should be supporting stronger resources for federal law enforcement rather than engaging in partisan funding fights.
NRCC Spokesman Christian Martinez said Titus and Horsford are not merely part of the problem but represent it, arguing they should start backing law enforcement and prioritize the safety of Nevadans.
The pressure did not stop there.
Titus also faced renewed criticism over past rhetoric after actor Dean Cain reposted a clip of comments in which she told political opponents “we’re coming for you,” using the moment to blast her representation and call for change.
Meanwhile, Susie Lee came under fire from conservatives over prior vulgar remarks directed at President Trump, which critics say reflect the kind of heated political rhetoric Americans are increasingly tired of hearing.
Republicans are now trying to tie all three Nevada Democrats to a broader climate of hostility and dysfunction in national politics, arguing voters want calmer leadership, stronger security, and respect for public safety institutions.
For Nevada voters, the issue lands in a practical way.
The Secret Service attack was a Washington event, but it highlighted a national concern: threats against public officials are real, security agencies remain essential, and political rhetoric can carry consequences far beyond cable television.
Nevada has long rewarded candidates who emphasize law and order, seriousness, and public safety. That makes incidents like Saturday’s especially relevant in a battleground state where swing voters often reject chaos from either side.
The immediate crisis ended with the president safe and the suspect in custody.
The political fallout, especially for Democrats tied to anti-law-enforcement messaging or controversial rhetoric, may last much longer.
