SUPPLY, DEMAND AND DINA’S DENIAL: Titus Scoffs at Link Between Illegal Immigration and Housing

“Carrie Buck says deportation of immigrants is driving down housing rental costs in Southern Nevada,” Titus posted. “I’ve introduced legislation to provide more Southern Nevadans with rental vouchers. Carrie is counting on ICE to show up.”

Buck’s actual argument was that Joe Biden’s illegal immigration crisis flooded an already strained housing market with additional demand, depleted lower-income housing and helped drive up costs. With illegal immigrants now being deported, Buck said Nevada is beginning to see prices fall.

The numbers show that Las Vegas renters are finally getting some relief. Zillow reported Monday that average Las Vegas rent had fallen $64 over the previous year, while separate rental data placed the metro’s median asking rent 1.8 percent lower than last June.

Titus responded by pretending basic supply and demand was a Republican conspiracy theory.

“Does Dina Titus know how supply and demand works?” Review-Journal columnist Victor Joecks responded. “Fewer illegals means less demand for rental homes, which means downward pressure on prices.”

A 2025 Department of Housing and Urban Development report found that the foreign-born population accounted for two-thirds of rental-demand growth nationwide. The study does not claim deportations alone explain every decrease in Las Vegas rent, but it obliterates Titus’ implication that immigration and housing demand have nothing to do with each other.

Titus’ preferred solution is vintage Washington. Ignore the illegal immigration driving additional demand, hand out more taxpayer-funded vouchers and force Nevada families to pay the bill twice. First through higher housing costs, then through higher government spending.

Her latest word game fits a border record spanning years.

Titus has repeatedly dismissed physical border security as ineffective and inhumane. In 2022, she declared, “I’ve never seen a wall somebody couldn’t climb over or crawl under,” while her official congressional website still attacks the border wall as ineffective.

The mockery was followed by votes. Titus opposed border-wall funding again and again, then voted against President Donald Trump’s Working Families Tax Cuts law, which included $46.5 billion for border barriers, billions more for Customs and Border Protection facilities and thousands of additional border personnel.

In 2023, Titus voted against the Schools Not Shelters Act, which prohibited federally funded schools from being converted into migrant housing. Months later, she voted against barring federal dollars from being used to house migrants on federal lands.

Titus also voted against the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act and Kate’s Law in 2017. The latter increased penalties for deported criminals who illegally reentered the country. In 2024, she voted against legislation withholding certain federal funds from sanctuary jurisdictions that refused to cooperate with immigration enforcement.

After Trump carried Nevada in 2024, Titus finally joined Republicans in supporting the Laken Riley Act. The election-year conversion did not last long. Months later, she was back to opposing the largest border-security investment in American history.

“Titus can’t say the word ‘illegal’ because every single time the choice was between protecting Nevadans or protecting illegals, Dina Titus chooses illegals,” NRCC Spokesman Christian Martinez posted on X in response.

The distinction Titus refuses to make is the entire point. Buck supports legal immigration and a pathway to citizenship for those who follow the law. She also believes people who illegally enter the country should be removed. Titus deliberately collapsed those positions into an attack on “immigrants” because acknowledging the word “illegal” would expose just how far outside the Nevada mainstream she has wandered.

Buck has now outraised the career politician for three consecutive quarters. Buck raised $812,000 during the latest reporting period, more than double Titus’ haul and the most ever raised by a Republican challenger against her in a single quarter.

Nevadans are watching rents, groceries and household bills, not policing the politically correct vocabulary of a Washington lifer. They understand that when millions of additional people compete for a limited number of affordable homes, prices rise. They also understand that enforcing the law is not cruelty.

Titus does not have a housing solution. She has a taxpayer checkbook, an allergy to the word “illegal” and a record of choosing Washington’s open-border machine over the Nevada families paying the price.
