CARSON CITY, NV — Nevada Secretary of State Francisco “Cisco” Aguilar has issued a formal demand to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), pressing federal officials to substantiate recent claims alleging that thousands of noncitizens are actively registered on Nevada voter rolls.
The official correspondence underscores growing friction between state election custodians and federal agencies over voter roll integrity protocols.
State Challenges Federal Data Methodology
In a letter addressed to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin on Wednesday, Aguilar stated that the federal government failed to identify a single specific individual flagged by the agency, disclose its underlying data sources, or explain how it matched Social Security numbers against public voter records that do not store such identifiers.
Federal authorities previously claimed that as many as 16,000 noncitizens were present on Nevada’s state voter registration rolls.

Protecting Eligible Voters
State election leadership cautioned that making unverified assertions regarding state voter files without providing verifiable data risks disenfranchising eligible Nevadans and eroding public confidence.
“We want to better understand your claims that thousands of alleged noncitizens are on Nevada’s voter rolls, again, none of which you have identified,” Sec. Aguilar wrote in his formal submission.
State election officials reiterated that Nevada operates multi-layered verification protocols alongside state law enforcement agencies to ensure only eligible U.S. citizens cast ballots in state and federal elections.
