Nevada Democratic Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto have cosponsored a GOP bill that would eliminate the income tax on cash tips, a campaign promise made by Donald Trump during a June campaign rally in Las Vegas, Nevada. Following his announcement in Las Vegas, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) sponsored the legislation.
Rosen’s campaign and the democratically-aligned Culinary Union referred to Trump’s proposal as a “distraction” and “empty talking points from self-serving politicians.”
Rosen’s opponent Sam Brown told NBC news at the time that he was “fully behind” the proposal.
“In states like this where we have a strong service-based economy, it makes a lot of sense,” Brown said of the no-taxes-on-tips proposal to NBC News. “And I wonder why Jacky Rosen hasn’t brought this up and isn’t a champion on it.”
Brown’s campaign has continually charged that Rosen’s unwavering support of President Joe Biden’s policies have increased the costs for Nevadans.
Despite Rosen’s support of the Inflation Reduction Act, Nevadans are paying an extra ~$32,000 a year for basic household expenses due to inflation, according to the bipartisan Joint Economic Committee.
Today, Brown told The Globe, “I’m pleased to see that Jacky Rosen is finally supporting a solution for working families, an idea championed by President Trump and me. Having worked in an Amazon warehouse to support my family, I understand the struggle of putting in 10- or 12-hour days just to make ends meet. Nevada workers deserve to keep more of their hard-earned money, and our plan to end taxes on tips will do just that. Nevadans won’t forget that Jacky Rosen had nearly 8 years to address this issue and did nothing. Once again, this is too little, too late from Jacky Rosen.”
Rosen’s campaign contends that she has been fighting for tax relief during her first term, yet she has not raised or led the no-tax-on-tips effort for hospitality workers until she cosponsored the legislation yesterday.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) blasted Rosen’s sudden c0-sponsorship as a “flip-flop.”
“Jacky Rosen is a spineless, flip-flopping politician who is desperate to save her political career. Nobody believes Rosen, whose main job in Washington is rubberstamping Joe Biden’s disastrous agenda, would help President Trump pass this bill,” said NRSC Spokeswoman Maggie Abboud in a statement.
“Make no mistake, Jacky Rosen has spent her entire Congressional career demonizing the America First movement as ‘extreme’ while relentlessly working to undermine President Trump’s agenda. For nearly eight years, Rosen has been an obstructionist, consistently voting in lockstep with Biden and the Democrats almost 100 percent of the time. Now, as her failures catch up to her, she’s scrambling to save face. Expect to see her shamelessly flip-flopping her way through November,” said Kristy Wilkinson, Communications Director for Sam Brown told The Globe.

I wonder is the Culinary Union still against it?
