LAS VEGAS, NV — A 17-year-old suspect is behind bars facing open murder and attempted murder charges on Monday night, October 5, 2026, as grief-stricken family members, classmates, and downtown community members held an emotional candlelight vigil on the sidewalk where 15-year-old Carth Onasi Jacobs-Rodgers was gunned down during the First Friday festival.
The arrest—announced by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Homicide Section and reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal—marks a major breakthrough 72 hours after gunfire disrupted the monthly cultural festival in the 18b Las Vegas Arts District.
The suspect, whose identity remains protected due to juvenile court statutes, was taken into custody and booked into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center on one count of open murder with a deadly weapon and two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

Candles, Tears, and Demands for Justice
As dusk fell over the Arts District on Monday, more than 50 mourners congregated at the corner of South Main Street and West Charleston Boulevard.
Wax candles flickered against the brick exterior of nearby galleries alongside bouquets of white roses, handwritten prayer cards, and blown-up portraits of Jacobs-Rodgers smiling in his Desert Pines High School athletic apparel.
Jacobs-Rodgers, an aspiring boxer and basketball player who was the oldest of nine siblings, was walking along Charleston Boulevard with friends when a physical brawl between youth groups erupted.
Detectives say the 17-year-old suspect produced a semi-automatic handgun and opened fire indiscriminately, striking Jacobs-Rodgers in the torso and wounding two other teenagers.
Paramedics rushed Jacobs-Rodgers to University Medical Center Trauma, where he was pronounced deceased.
“He was just a kid coming down to enjoy the art, the food, and his friends,” mourners whispered through tears as candles were passed from hand to hand. “Our teenagers deserve to walk the streets of this city without fearing they won’t make it home.”
Digital Video Net Snags Suspect
The rapid arrest came after homicide detectives impounded dozens of digital video files from commercial security systems, City of Las Vegas traffic cameras, and smartphone clips uploaded directly by festival attendees.

Detectives tracked the youth’s flight path through an alleyway west of Main Street, ultimately locating and detaining him for formal interrogation.
Because the suspect is 17 years old and accused of open murder with a firearm, Nevada law establishes a mechanism for prosecutors to certify him as an adult.
The Clark County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case to file formal charging paperwork in Las Vegas Justice Court, which would transfer jurisdiction out of the juvenile system and unseal the defendant’s name.
The fatal shooting has prompted the City of Las Vegas and the First Friday Foundation to expedite security reviews, with city leaders evaluating perimeter fencing, mandatory weapons detection gates, and unaccompanied minor curfews before the November gathering.
