Left-Turn Collision in South Crosswalk

According to evidence documented at the scene, witness statements, and intersection video surveillance reviewed by Metro fatal crash reconstructionists, the 83-year-old pedestrian was walking eastbound in the south marked crosswalk of South Pecos Road across East Hacienda Avenue.

At the same time, a 2023 Ford F-350 driven by 51-year-old Jesus G. Cortes-Sanchez was traveling westbound on East Hacienda Avenue, approaching the Pecos intersection.

The driver initiated a westbound-to-southbound left turn onto South Pecos Road on a solid green permissive traffic signal.

As the truck executed the turn, the front of the Ford struck the elderly woman while she was lawfully traversing the crosswalk, projecting her southward onto the asphalt roadway.

The driver of the F-350 immediately brought the vehicle to a controlled stop just south of the intersection, dialed 911, and remained at the scene.

Clark County Fire Department emergency medical responders treated the victim roadside before rushing her to the Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center Trauma Unit with catastrophic blunt force trauma.

Despite intensive resuscitation efforts by emergency room trauma physicians, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Impairment Ruled Out as Crosswalk Dangers Mount

Metro confirmed that the driver of the Ford did not claim injuries, cooperated fully with investigators, and displayed no signs of alcohol or drug impairment.

The intersection remained partially restricted for several hours Monday morning while detectives from the Collision Investigation Section mapped tire telemetry, reviewed traffic signal phasing, and examined sightlines.

The collision marks the continuation of an alarming autumn surge in pedestrian casualties across Southern Nevada, pushing Metro’s 2026 fatal crash count to 92—narrowly following the confirmed deaths of pedestrians on South Las Vegas Boulevard (Fatal #90) and West Spring Mountain Road (Fatal #91).

Traffic safety advocates have repeatedly raised alarms regarding high-volume arterials like Pecos Road, where multi-lane crosswalks leave vulnerable seniors exposed to left-turning traffic when permissive green signals fail to provide dedicated pedestrian-only clearance phases.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity once family notifications are complete.

The collision remains under active investigation by the LVMPD Collision Investigation Section.
