LAS VEGAS, NV — The first major heat wave of 2026 has left its mark on the record books. Harry Reid International Airport officially reached 104°F (40°C) on both Monday and Tuesday, surpassing the previous daily records for mid-May and marking the hottest temperatures recorded in the valley so far this year.
The “Century Mark” Milestone
The record-breaking surge arrived more than two weeks ahead of schedule. Historically, Las Vegas does not hit 100 degrees until May 24.
-
The Record: Monday’s high of 104°F broke the 1990 record of 103°F. Tuesday followed suit, matching the all-time May 12 record set in 1996.
-
The Surge: These temperatures were roughly 17 degrees above the normal mid-May average of 87°F, creating what local meteorologists describe as a “weather whiplash” after a relatively mild April.
Relief on the Way: The Cooling Trend
The National Weather Service (NWS) confirms that the ridge of high pressure is finally shifting. A dry front pushing through the region today will bring breezy conditions and a noticeable dip in temperatures.
-
Wednesday Forecast: Highs are expected to reach 96°F (35.5°C)—a nearly 10-degree drop from yesterday’s peak.
-
Extended Outlook: The valley is expected to remain in the low-to-mid 90s for the remainder of the week, aligning more closely with late-spring averages.
Safety Reminders
Despite the cooling trend, NWS officials remind residents that 90-degree weather still carries a moderate heat risk for vulnerable populations.
-
Hydration: Residents are encouraged to continue proactive hydration.
-
Pet Safety: Even in the mid-90s, asphalt temperatures can exceed 130°F. Keep pets on the grass or walk them during the early morning hours.
