Southern Nevada Health District Confirms First 2026 Human Case of West Nile Virus

LAS VEGAS, NV — Public health officials have officially confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus identified within the Las Vegas valley for the 2026 vector monitoring season.

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) unsealed the diagnostic data on Tuesday afternoon, prompting regional environmental health networks to expand seasonal vector control and mosquito trapping operations.

The Neuroinvasive Diagnosis

The patient has been identified as a Clark County woman in her 40s. According to clinical briefs released by county epidemiologists, she was diagnosed with the neuroinvasive form of the illness, which represents the most severe manifestation of the virus and can impact the central nervous system.

Medical registries confirm that the resident required acute hospitalization at a valley medical facility to manage the onset of symptoms. Public health coordinators stated that she has since responded positively to medical treatments, cleared the critical window, and has been discharged to continue her recovery at home.

Vector Mitigation Measures

While environmental health teams continuously monitor hundreds of stagnant water traps across Southern Nevada, officials noted that no regional mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus yet this summer.

“We are urging all valley residents to actively inspect their properties and eliminate standing pools of water,” stated SNHD District Health Officer Dr. Cassius Lockett in an accompanying public advisory.

Health coordinators recommend that residents utilize insect repellent containing EPA-registered active ingredients, wear protective clothing during peak twilight mosquito activity hours, and report unmaintained residential swimming pools directly to local code enforcement divisions to suppress local breeding habitats.
