A family photo shoot at Lee Meadows in Mt. Charleston turned into a nightmare for the Wilkey family from Logandale on Saturday when a wild horse kicked their three-year-old daughter, Olivia, in the head.
Haley Wilkey, the mother, recounted the terrifying incident, stating that two wild horses had calmly approached the area while they were having a picnic. As she filmed her daughters interacting with the horses, she turned away briefly to attend to her son, and in that moment, the horse kicked Olivia.
The impact left Olivia unresponsive, and Wilkey immediately screamed for her husband, who drove down the mountain to call for help due to the lack of cell service. A bystander with a first aid kit offered assistance, helping to control the bleeding until an ambulance arrived. Olivia was airlifted to UMC and miraculously showed no signs of brain damage.
The family expressed immense gratitude to the bystander who helped save Olivia’s life and wanted to share their story to warn other parents about the dangers of wild horses. Haley Wilkey admitted that, in hindsight, she was too close to the horse and would now avoid such situations altogether.
The incident serves as a reminder of wild animals’ unpredictable nature and the importance of maintaining a safe distance when encountering them.
