LAS VEGAS – A tourist who fell victim to a stabbing incident at a Las Vegas Strip resort has initiated a lawsuit against the hotel operator, alleging negligence in providing security.
Leslie Alexander, from Canal Winchester, Ohio, was stabbed by Nathaniel Mahoney on September 6, 2021, according to court records and Alexander’s lawsuit. The attack occurred as Alexander was walking inside the MGM Grand towards the Las Vegas Strip entrance, with Mahoney sitting near a bank of slot machines. The lawsuit highlights that the attack, which was sudden and unprovoked, seemed to last several minutes from Alexander’s perspective.
Notably, the lawsuit asserts that no response from the hotel’s security or employees occurred until after the attack had already taken place. Mahoney was later identified as a suspect in a previous stabbing at the MGM Grand the night before Alexander’s attack, in which a similar pattern of random stabbing was observed near the entrance.
Police took Mahoney into custody on the Las Vegas Strip shortly after the second stabbing and discovered a four-and-a-half-inch butterfly knife in his possession. Initially facing multiple charges, Mahoney eventually pled guilty to one count of assault with a deadly weapon, resulting in a prison sentence of 19-48 months.
Alexander’s lawsuit claims that MGM Resorts failed to provide adequate protection for its patrons. She is seeking a minimum of $15,000 in damages, which is standard in civil cases in Nevada.
Representatives from MGM Resorts have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the lawsuit.
Despite this incident, recent records indicate a decline of nearly 18% in personal crimes, such as homicides, sexual offenses, or assaults, in the Las Vegas Strip area command from August 2022 to August 2023.
