Author: Nevada Globe Staff
NEVADA – The nation’s largest blood supplier reports a 50% drop in blood supplies over the summer, creating an emergency shortage in Nevada and the U.S.
Vitalant wants to warn potential blood donors that the FDA recently eased some donation criteria. Vitalant urges those who can donate blood to do so before Labor Day.
Blood type O, the most common for transfusions, is in short supply.
Dr. Ralph Vassallo, Vitalant’s chief medical and scientific officer, said hospitals need donations now. Blood needs aren’t predictable. Several patients may have emergencies, while one patient’s surgery may require dozens of blood units.
