Wildfire Crews Expand Containment on Massive 91,000-Acre Bug Fire as Rain Offers Brief Relief in Washoe County

RENO, NV — Interagency wildland firefighting teams made significant headway across Northern Nevada as containment on the Bug Fire climbed to 31%, despite the blaze swelling to 91,125 acres across Washoe, Lassen, and Sierra counties.

The fire—which ignited August 8 off U.S. Highway 395 before merging with the Fred Mountain Fire—prompted Level 3 “EVACUATE NOW” directives for over 4,000 residents across Palomino Valley, Hungry Valley, Cold Springs, and surrounding rural corridors. Meanwhile, crews south of Pyramid Lake reached 44% containment on the separate 40,689-acre Stallion Fire.

Air Drops, Tactical Handlines, and Flood Hazards

Supported by heavy water drops from Nevada Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, ground crews from Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and CAL FIRE fortified defensive bulldozer lines along Winnemucca Ranch Road.

While brief localized thunderstorms delivered scattered moisture to active flanks, emergency managers cautioned that torrential rains over fire-stripped soils triggered flash flood and mudslide warnings across active burn scars.

“Our crews have secured substantial containment lines along the eastern perimeter, but high daytime temperatures and shifting outflow winds demand continued vigilance,” regional interagency incident commanders noted.

Shelters and Relief Fund Mobilization

Emergency Shelters: Human shelters remain operational at the Evelyn Mount Community Center (1301 Valley Rd, Reno) and the Reno Gym (34 Reservation Rd).
Livestock Accommodations: Large livestock facilities remain active at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center (1350 N. Wells Ave).
Community Aid: The Community Foundation of Northern Nevada (CFNN) launched the 2026 Northern Nevada Wildfire Relief Fund to provide direct financial grants for displaced families and volunteer animal rescue organizations.
