Las Vegas Valley Water District Raises Rates for Heavy Users

The valley’s top water users may soon pay more after two new water rate hikes were authorized.

Single-family homes could be affected.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District board changed watering restrictions Monday.

Clark County approved improvements Tuesday to reduce water use in southern Nevada.

By taxing customers, the county hopes to encourage more efficient water use.

For every thousand gallons over the barrier, users would be charged $9.

The valley’s biggest water users will be charged a “overuse charge.” This targets the top 10% of single-family families who overuse it.

90% of single-family valley households will see little to no bill change.

Water tiers will be equalized. All single-family residences in the water district will soon pay the same rate for water.

“We charge $1.40 per thousand gallons up to 5000 gallons because that’s enough water for washing dishes, taking showers, and doing laundry, and making sure everyone in our community has reasonably priced water for those basic – genuinely human tasks.”

The service adjustments begin in 2023. These modifications will save 11,000 acre-feet of water annually.

The summer water usage threshold is 28,000 gallons per household.

During the winter, the threshold is 14,000 gallons.
