Three Newborns Babies With Heart Abnormalities at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center Had Candida Auris, a Drug-Resistant “Superbug,” According to the CDC.
LAS VEGAS – According to data, the first U.S. cluster of pediatric cases of a potentially fatal fungus was detected at a Las Vegas hospital in May.
Three children with heart abnormalities were infected with drug-resistant Candida auris, according to a CDC study obtained through a public documents request.
In the U.S., less than 10 cases of C. auris have been documented in children, and no clusters involving several pediatric cases at a single facility have been detected.
The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services reported a fourth pediatric case at the hospital.
Patients with lengthy hospitalizations, a central venous catheter, or other lines or tubes entering their body are at higher risk for C. auris infections, according to the CDC.
At least 536 cases have been documented at 26 Southern Nevada hospitals and care homes since August 2021. Before 2017, Nevada had no cases.
94 cases were documented at Sunrise, the region’s largest acute-care hospital, which contains a pediatric cardiac unit.
