Democratic Assemblywoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong Announces Candidacy for Las Vegas City Council

This morning, Assemblywoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong (AD-6) announced that she will not seek re-election after serving two terms in the Assembly. Instead, Summer-Armstrong will pursue a Las Vegas City Council seat (Ward 5) currently held by Cedric Crear who is running for mayor.

In her announcement she highlights her public service, her advocacy,  and her residency in Ward 5 for over 24 years. “This is my neighborhood and my neighbors. And there is no one better equipped to recognize and address the unique challenges Ward 5 faces,” Armstrong said. Challenges she then claims have “historically been ignored.”

With this announcement, Armstrong joins joins a growing number of Democrats who will not return to the legislature, including Michelle Gorelow, Bea Duran, and Cameron “C.H.” Miller, who announced their exits amid major ethics scandals involving the approval of taxpayer funds directed to nonprofits tied to Democratic legislators. Assemblywomen Sarah Peters (AD-24) and Lesley Cohen (AD-29) also announced they will not be seeking reelection.

Assemblywomen Clara Thomas (AD-1) and Angie Taylor (AD-27) recently announced that they will be running for state Senate.

Armstong will likely face C.H. Miller for the Ward 5 seat which includes portions of the Historic Westside, downtown Las Vegas and neighborhoods in the northwestern part of the valley.

Governor Lombardo’s Better Nevada PAC has publicly chastised specific Democratic legislators for fostering a “Culture of Corruption” and their efforts have seemingly applied effective pressure to the Democrats involved in this growing scandal.

It’s no surprise to see a growing number of Nevada Democrats leaving the state legislature,” said Better Nevada PAC spokesman John Burke. “Nevadans are tired of politicians who put their own interests before the people who elected them. The growing cloud of scandal surrounding our state legislature shows it’s time to elect new leaders to represent Nevada families.”
