According to data provided by the Nevada Secretary of State, Nevada saw an increase of 16,905 active registered voters from May to June. Of those new registrations, Republicans accounted for 12,138—72 percent of all newly registered voters
Although Democrats still lead in state-wide voter registration, that margin has shriveled to under three percent. A lead that Jon Ralston of the Nevada Independent refers to as “unprecedented since the Reagan era.”
Nevada is trending along with the rest of the country. The Associated Press (AP) reports that more than one million voters switched their party affiliation to Republican with the most notable demographic shift coming from the suburban swing voters who favored Biden in 2020. According to their data analysis, record inflation, gas prices and fears that the country is headed the wrong direction are causing a mass exodus to the GOP.
Over the last year, roughly two-thirds of the 1.7 million voters who changed their party affiliation shifted to the Republican Party. In all, more than 1 million people became Republicans compared to about 630,000 who became Democrats.
Republicans benefited last year as suburban parents grew increasingly frustrated by prolonged pandemic-related schools closures. And as inflation intensified more recently, the Republican National Committee has been hosting voter registration events at gas stations in suburban areas across swing states like Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania to link the Biden administration to record-high gas prices.
This mass exodus to the GOP, according to numerous polls, is a direct consequence of the Biden economy, soaring inflation and gas prices. In a newly published Monmouth poll, Joe Biden’s approval rating is at an all-time low of 36 percent approval, marking an 18 point drop since January 2021.
According to MSN, Monmouth’s summary of its polling data broke down the issues most on American’s minds:
Nearly half of the public names either inflation (33%) or gas prices (15%) as the biggest concern facing their family right now. The economy in general (9%) and paying everyday bills (6%) are among other financial concerns mentioned.
Abortion, which has registered less than 1% on this question in prior Monmouth polls going back to 2015, is currently named by 5% – predominantly among Democrats (9%).
While Democrats have made clear they hope anger over the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade will help bolster their dire midterm election prospects, the survey found that inflation and gas prices remain by far the key issues for most voters.
As vulnerable Nevada Democrats run from the recessive economy, high gas prices, and soaring inflation that is plaguing their poll numbers, they are also running from the concerns of a majority of the electorate. In turn, the electorate is running from them.
