Amazon’s Zoox Halts Driverless Operations for Safety Review After Vegas Mishap

Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle company Zoox has issued a voluntary software recall for 270 of its robotaxis following a minor collision in Las Vegas on April 8, 2025. The incident involved an unoccupied Zoox vehicle operating in autonomous mode, which misjudged the intentions of a passenger car approaching from a perpendicular driveway. The robotaxi anticipated the car would proceed forward, but the car stopped, leading to a collision despite the robotaxi’s hard braking. No injuries were reported, and both vehicles sustained minor damage.
Following the crash, Zoox temporarily halted its driverless operations to conduct an internal review. The company identified a software issue affecting vehicles traveling over 40 mph, where the system might inaccurately predict the behavior of other vehicles approaching perpendicularly and stopping. A software update was developed and deployed to address this flaw, and driverless operations resumed on April 17 after the update was implemented across the affected fleet.
Zoox emphasized its commitment to transparency, regulatory compliance, and rider safety in the communities it serves. The company continues to prepare for the launch of its commercial robotaxi service in Las Vegas later this year.
