Clark County Education Association Refuses to Endorse Steve Sisolak

After their staunch support of Governor Steve Sisolak in 2018, the Clark County Education Association refuses to endorse Governor Steve Sisolak for re-election. The CCEA is the largest teachers union in Nevada and represents over 18,000 licensed professionals within Clark County School District.

In a press release, CCEA wrote, “In the 2018 gubernatorial election, CCEA supported Steve Sisolak. We helped him win the primary and go on to win the general election. Sisolak has a record and it was important to know what he was going to change moving forward. This moment requires State Leadership to step up, and collaborate strategically with School Districts, if we are to seriously address the issues facing our educators and students. We expected to hear a plan to address these issues over the next four years; and we did not. Accordingly, CCEA cannot support Steve Sisolak for reelection and will not be making an endorsement in the 2022 Governor’s race.”

As reported by The Globe, the Clark County School District (CCSD) has made the news for all the wrong reasons. Violence, teacher shortages, sexually explicit assignments and abysmal testing scores have plagued the school district. 

Recent test scores of Clark County School District’s (CCSD) 3rd to 8th grade students, taken and published by Smart Balance Assessments, show that only 3.9 percent of Black students and 7.4 percent of Hispanic students were proficient in Math. In English, 11.2 percent of Black students and 15.7 percent of Hispanic students were proficient. Overall, only 20 percent of Clark County students tested proficient in English Language Arts. In Math, it was 11.5 percent.

Nevada, as a whole, ranks 49th in the country in education outcomes, 47th in numeracy rate and literacy rate, 49th in drop out rate, 48th in master degrees, and last in the share of doctorate degrees in the nation. Nevada also ranks 46th in school systems which measures student access, school quality and student safety.

Elizabeth Ray, Lombardo for Governor Spokesperson released this statement: “Steve Sisolak has failed our kids, our educators, and our schools for far too long. Our schools are unsafe, our students are failing to meet basic academic benchmarks, and our teachers have a poor quality of life. Unlike Steve Sisolak, Sheriff Joe Lombardo has a plan to fix Nevada’s broken education system, and he will immediately work to bring safety, accountability, and empowerment to our schools.”
