Republican Governor Joe Lombardo will give the State of the State this evening out of the Legislative building in Carson City.
During his inauguration ball this past weekend, the governor expressed optimism in his remarks, saying that the “sun is shining on Nevada.” During his victory speech, Governor Lombardo promised that Nevadan’s “brightest days are ahead.”
His optimism may also be shared by tax payers as the Governor sees “no reason to raise taxes”, and in his first series of executive orders, he eliminated all existing pandemic restrictions put in place by the Sisolak administration and has ordered a comprehensive review of business and occupational licensing regulations.
Nevada’s licensing laws for lower-income jobs are the most oppressive nationwide. These laws require people to pay enormous fees before they can enter into gainful employment. Robert Fellner, Vice President of the Nevada Policy Research Institute believes that Lombardo’s licensing plan will help Nevadans’ get back to work. Fellner cites “The reform will also create new jobs (one study estimates an 8.5% employment boost), which will ultimately lead to lower prices for consumers.”
Currently, Nevada’s unemployment rate inched upward towards 4.9 percent, down from a high of 30 percent caused by former Governor Sisolak’s closures of small businesses during the pandemic.
On the campaign trail, Lombardo promised to reform Nevada’s failing education system, address and repeal “soft-on-crime legislation”, and has promised historic investments in education.
The Globe will be covering the State of the State in Carson City and will provide a review and report.
